Our Process

ASSESS

This step of the process provides Industrial Resolution with the data they need to review the target cluster for stability and upgrade feasibility. The Upgrade Recommendations Report will also be provided during this step.

Cluster Backups

In order to properly upgrade an Elastic cluster, there should be a data backup process already in-place. Elastic offers this data parity through both their Snapshot offerings as well as Cross-Cluster Replication. Regardless of the tool used, it is a requirement that data backups are in-place for the target cluster. Should no data backups be currently set up, a prerequisite for the completion of the upgrade process will be establishing these backups.

Report Generation

Once an IR Engineer has reviewed the target cluster for stability and upgrade feasibility (through independent benchmarking and client-led deep dive meetings), they will generate a Upgrade Recommendations Report to outline the upgrade process. This report will include findings on stability, feasibility of the upgrade path, and recommendations for a successful upgrade.

PERFORM

The buld of the upgrade takes place during this step. An Industrial Resolution Engineer, with a comprehensive plan in-place, performs the version upgrade of the target cluster while keeping the client abreast of progress.

Indy Res Cluster Access

Requiring access to the target cluster may seem implied inclusion with the Elastic Version Upgrade package, but its importance should not be understated. Elastic ‘superuser’ access to the cluster for the Industrial Resolution Engineer performing the upgrade, as well as knowledge of how and where data backups are stored, is critical to the package’s success.

Upgrade Timeline

The timetable for the upgrade process can vary greatly based on circumstantial factors related to the target cluster - including, but not limited to: cluster size, cluster stability, cluster version, complexity of the cluster environment etc. Review the following pakages on the  next page for rough guidelines regarding the upgrade timeline.

REVIEW

Industrial Resolution Engineers validates the upgrade of the target cluster in conjunction with the client. A Cluster Upgrade Review of the engagement, containing the conditions of the target cluster, means taken during the upgrade process, and outstanding considerations will be prepared and delivered by the IR Engineer responsible for the upgrade.

Why Upgrade?

In keeping with Elastic’s described best practices, ensuring a cluster is up-to-date is one of the most important aspects of cluster maintenance. While clusters on previous versions of Elasticsearch can (and will) function as expected, Elastic’s constant iteration on its flagship product continuously provides more features and functionality to end-users.

With the Elastic Version Upgrade package, your cluster will be reviewed for stability and upgrade feasibility. This information will be used by the IR Engineer to provide you with a Upgrade Recommendations Report, which will outline the ideal version for your upgrade in addition to any other considerations you may need to be aware of. Following your approval of our plan, the target cluster will be upgraded to the version outlined within our recommendations.
