Performance Tuning

Whether your cluster is losing data for unknown reasons, suffering from failures, delivering unacceptable response times or operating expensively at bloated levels, the Elastic Performance Tuning package is built to provide solutions.

Our Process

Core Deliverable

Investigate

This step of the process provides the IR Engineers with the data they’ll need to review the target cluster for stability and functionality. The Tuning Recommendations Report will be delivered at the end of this step. If you elect to act on the recommendations in the report using Industrial Resolution Elastic consulting hours, then the Perform, Refine and Review steps follow Investigate. Important considerations for the Investigate step are as follows:

DIAGNOSTIC DUMPS

A lot can be understood about a cluster based on its current contents and configurations. The first step is to gather this information from the cluster itself using a combination of automated programs and manual inspection. The IR Engineer will assist you in running any of these steps, or if you are able to grant sufficient permissions, can conduct the diagnostic dumps without your involvement.

CLIENT INTERVIEWS

While an IR Engineer is reviewing your cluster for stability and functionality from diagnostics, they will also begin to gather your expectations for the performance of your Elastic installation. This is done in one or more meetings where the IR Engineer interviews you and your team to understand why your cluster is constructed the way it is and what the business requirements are for its performance. These interviews often include system demonstrations and “deep dives” into the underpinnings of the system. Following this activity, the IR Engineer will then prepare and deliver your Tuning Recommendations Report.

Add-on Options

PERFORM

The most involved of the process, the Perform step is where the bulk of the stabilization and tuning takes place. An IR Engineer, with a comprehensive plan in-place, performs the tuning of your cluster in accordance with the recommendations report while keeping you abreast of progress. An important note to consider is that the timetable for the tuning process can very greatly based on circumstantial factors related to the target cluster - including, but not limited to: cluster size, cluster stability, cluster version, complexity of cluster environment etc.

REFINE

Providing the iterative improvement of the tuning process, Refine is when the IR Engineer reports back to you and reviews the changes that were made. An in-flight check on the stability of the cluster is also performed during this step. Should the cluster require additional tuning, the Perform step will be repeated using new information related to the clusters' performance and your feedback.

REVIEW

Once the cluster has been tuned and stabilized to a satisfactory and best-practice state, implementing the changes you selected from the Tuning Recommendation Reports, the Elastic Tuning package moves into the Review step. This final step is when the IR Engineer validates the stability and functionality of the cluster with you and writes a final report of the engagement, containing the condition of your Elastic installation, changes made during the tuning process, and any outstanding considerations. This Cluster Tuning Review is delivered to you as the final step of the process.

Why

With the Elastic Performance Tuning Package, first your cluster will be reviewed for current performance and functionality. Second, your expectations for how your Elastic installation should operate and perform will be documented. This information will be used by the IR Engineer to provide you with a recommendations plan, which will outline the ideal solution for your tuning in addition to any other considerations you may need to be aware of.

Benefits

Out of the box, the Elastic Performance Tuning package includes the following:

  • A Tuning Recommendations Report that,

    • Identifies the most-likely causes for performance degradation in your cluster

    • Presents opportunities for improvement in your existing cluster that are in line with your current and future needs

It is likely you will want to proceed to fix your performance problems as detailed in the report. This can be done by purchased Industrial Resolution Elastic consulting hours to implement the improvements in the report. Since cluster tuning is an iterative process, the IR engineer will be working closely with you to identify sources of trouble and test the potential solutions throughout the project. If you choose this path, the package will also include:

  • Stabilization and Tuning of your cluster for the recommendations included in the report

    • You select the tasks and changes which will provide you the greatest Bang for the Buck

  • A Cluster Tuning Review detailing what was done during the project, what you need to know about changes in your Elastic installation and continued steps you can take to make your system even more stable, faster and more cost-effective
